Andy Murray progressed to the third round of the Italian Open with a 6-3 6-3 win over Kazakh qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin in Rome.
British number one Murray, 28, who received a bye in the first round, will next face Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut or Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.
Heather Watson was beaten 6-4 6-2 in round two by Czech Barbora Strycova.
The British number two, 23, won the opening four games but lost 12 of the next 14 against the world number 37.
Later on Wednesday, British number one Johanna Konta takes on seventh-seeded Italian Roberta Vinci in the second round.
Assistant coach Jamie Delgado and Great Britain Davis Cup captain Leon Smith were in Murray's box for the world number three's first match sincesplitting from coach Amelie Mauresmo this week.
Murray is not anticipating appointing a replacement before the French Open, which begins on 22 May.
"I haven't thought loads about it," he told Sky Sports.
"The thing with the top players, the super coaches, is that experience around the major events and the big matches, understanding the stress and pressure and how to deal with that.
"But I made some technical changes on my serve over the last couple of months and that's taken my game up a level.
"The ex-players don't tend to be technical coaches, so it's tough to pick."
World number 55 Watson said her defeat by Strycova was "tough to take".
"I was playing super well, then my opponent stepped up her game, I dropped mine a little and it turned the match completely," she added.
"That happens sometimes. It happens more often on clay than other surface. It was a big opportunity for me today and I'll have to learn from this one."
